Amplify the Y - written by Will Watterson, YMCA National Programme Manager

‘Amplify The Y' is a series of five ambitious and inspiring projects that will strengthen the YMCA movement across Aotearoa over the next three years. The ATY programme will cover strategic development, building governance and cultural capability and developing our young people. It will help members of the YMCA movement collaborate in ways that make the Y greater than the sum of its parts!

'Amplify The Y' consists of five main projects:

Communities Of Practice

We are developing Communities of Practice (COPs), aligned with each of our different service areas. This project will build more durable connections and relationships both across associations and with the National Office as a diverse range of our staff start working together on key projects and sharing resources.

Honouring Te Tiriti

YMCA aims to build its bicultural capability and diversity for several important reasons: A more bicultural organisation will enable programmes and services to be designed and delivered by Māori for Māori.

Youth InspYre

The YMCA Youth Declaration and Strategy (2020) sets out a long-term strategic approach for the Y to become the organisation of choice for youth development.

The Action Plan is a combination of new initiatives as well as transforming the existing movement and services the Y delivers. The objective of the Youth InspYre initiative is to progress the implementation of the three focus areas in this plan.

One Y

The One Y project has three components, which will require commitment to working as One Y, and collaboration:

> Develop a national strategy

> Enhance governance including board diversity, skills and expertise

>Develop a contemporary constitutional model that provides a foundation for a strategically focused future.

Raise Up

Raise Up is YMCA's youth development programme run by youth for youth and operates from locations across New Zealand. Established in 2002, Raise Up is built on best-practise youth development principles. Over the next three years Raise Up will be rolled out across New Zealand, with 15 new Raise Up crews in operation across 10 YMCAs. You can read about our Raise Up here

What this all means is that we have a national focus on improving the YMCA that will flow through to the local YMCA and bring benefits and new initiatives to our community here in the Bay.
